2007 FEDERAL ELECTION - MEDICARE

AACMA has launched its election campaign for the inclusion of AACMA-accredited acupuncturists under the Medicare Enhanced Primary Care (EPC) program. This would allow eligible Australians with a chronic condition and complex care needs to receive Medicare-funded rebates for up to five acupuncture treatments per year.

Australians are entitled to have access to the best available health care under Medicare. This includes access to acupuncture and related treatment provided by qualified acupuncturists under the Enhanced Primary Care program.

There is sufficient evidence and clinical justification to support its inclusion in the EPC program as a treatment option for chronic illness and complex health conditions.

There is a credible mechanism in place to identify accredited acupuncturists who may be eligible for EPC provider recognition.

We believe a commitment on this matter is possible on the basis of this submission and should not be deferred until after the election.

Nationally, AACMA represents over 1570 qualified acupuncturists and 320 students of acupuncture, over 85% of qualified practitioners. With a notional database of 1,000 - 2,000 patients per practitioner, this corresponds to 1.5 to 3 million Australians with an immediate or long-term interest in the outcome of this issue.
